Perforated Aluminum Covers

PNW performance rating: Moderate. Perforated covers work adequately with large leaves and twigs but struggle with the smaller debris types prevalent in King County. Douglas fir needles can wedge into perforations and create miniature dams. Cedar scale and pollen accumulate on the surface and reduce water flow-through over time. In heavy rain events, the limited open area of perforations can cause water to overshoot the gutter entirely — the opposite of the intended effect.

  • Wet, debris-laden foam inserts can double or triple the weight inside your gutters, accelerating sagging and hanger failure.

Brush-Style Inserts

These bristle-filled cylinders (resembling oversized bottle brushes) sit inside the gutter and catch debris on their bristles while water flows around them through the spaces between bristles.

PNW performance rating: Poor. Brush-style guards share many of the problems of foam inserts in our climate:

  • The bristles trap fine debris — particularly Douglas fir needles and cedar scale — that is nearly impossible to remove without pulling the entire brush out and cleaning it manually. The cleaning process is messier and more time-consuming than simply cleaning an unprotected gutter.
  • In heavy rain, the bristle volume reduces the gutter’s effective water-carrying capacity, potentially causing overflow during the intense rainfall events common in King County.
  • Accumulated organic debris between the bristles decomposes in our damp climate, forming a nutrient-rich slurry that promotes algae growth and produces foul odors.

What Gutter Guards Will Not Do
